A cake smash is the session that closes out a baby's first year: a set built for one child, a cake that is allowed to lose, and a camera quick enough to keep up with somebody who has just turned one. Studio FB USA photographs these indoors in Summerville, South Carolina, where light, warmth and mess all stay under our control, for families across the Charleston area. Searching for cake smash photography in the Charleston area turns up two different things. One is a family session with a cake added at the end. The other is a session designed around the cake from the floor up, which is what happens here.
Almost everything about a child of this age argues for photographing indoors. The floor has to wash clean, the light has to stay put while the subject moves in four directions at once, the room has to be warm for a baby wearing very little, and nothing within arm’s reach can be breakable. Our room on Crosscut Lane is set up for exactly that, a short drive from the Nexton, Cane Bay and Knightsville side of Summerville and an easy one for families coming in from Ladson, Goose Creek, North Charleston and Moncks Corner.
Direction at twelve months is mostly patience. Nobody holds a pose, nobody looks on request, and the mood turns over every thirty seconds, so the pictures come from staying low, staying quiet and working fast. Parents stay in the room the whole time, in the frame or just outside it, and usually end up in the best photograph of the day.

Twelve months is the headline, but the useful stretch is wider than the birthday itself.
Most families claim a studio date two to four weeks out from the party. That is enough time to design the set, and, more usefully, it leaves somewhere to move to when a fever arrives that week. First birthdays get rescheduled more often than anything else we photograph, and nobody here treats that as a problem.
Two or three milestones photographed by the same studio hang together on a wall, because they were lit and edited by the same hand. Pictures gathered from three different photographers across one year rarely do.
Around six months.
The baby sits unaided for the first time, which is what makes upright portraits possible. This is the milestone photoshoot families ask about most.
Nine to ten months.
Pulling up on furniture, crawling at speed, and a firm opinion about being put back down. Photographs full of motion.
Eleven to thirteen months.
The smash. A birthday is a date, not a deadline, and the session can sit comfortably on either side of it.

The session runs in stages, and the order is not up for discussion, because frosting is permanent.
The set is built beforehand around a color or a theme the family picks, and kept plain enough that the child is still the loudest thing in the picture. A soft buttercream cake in a shade that separates from the backdrop behaves best under small hands; firm fondant refuses to come apart, and dark dye stains skin. Small beats large, since very little of it gets eaten.
Book the hour after a nap and a feed, bring a change of clothes and a towel, and expect a reaction nobody predicted.
Dressed portraits first.
Outfit clean, set clean, nothing sticky in sight. These are the frames that go on an invitation and to the grandparents.
Then the cake.
It goes down in front of the baby and nothing is asked of anyone. Some children charge it, some poke it once and check whether they are in trouble, some want no part of it. All three read well.
Then water.
A tub of bubbles turns the cleanup into the funniest sequence in the gallery, for as long as the baby is willing.
