A gender reveal is a family event first and a photograph second, which is exactly why hiring a photographer makes sense: the parents should be living the moment, not filming it, and the family members holding their phones will all miss the same second.
Our coverage is documentary with a few directed moments. The arrival of guests, the decorations, the games and the food are photographed as they happen. The reveal itself is choreographed, briefly, so that everyone is in the frame, facing the right way, in good light. The reactions are photographed continuously from the countdown until the celebration settles down. Then we make a set of portraits: the parents together, the parents with the grandparents, the family with the color.

Capturing the Reaction, Not Just the Color
The color is the news; the reaction is the photograph. A good gender reveal gallery shows the parents' faces at the instant the smoke or the balloons or the confetti appear, then the grandmother's hands over her mouth, then the older sibling jumping, then the hug. To get all of it, we position ourselves where we can see the parents and the crowd at once, and we shoot continuously through the moment.
That requires a little planning. The reveal should happen in open shade or in even light, not with the sun behind the parents. The parents should face the camera with the mechanism beside or behind them. The crowd should be close enough to be part of the image. And there should be a countdown, said out loud, so nobody triggers early. We handle all of it on the day, in a minute or two, without turning the party into a photo shoot.

Including the Whole Family
Gender reveals bring together relatives who do not see each other often, and the portraits made at the party are frequently the only recent photographs of the whole extended family. We plan for that with a short list of groupings, made with you beforehand: the parents, each set of grandparents, siblings, godparents, the full group. A few minutes after the reveal, while the energy is high, is the best time for them.
The parents also get a short portrait session of their own. A gender reveal usually falls between 16 and 22 weeks, early enough that a maternity session is still ahead, and many families use these portraits as a first chapter and book the maternity session with us for the third trimester. Both are edited in the same style so the images belong together.
